I Can’t Homeschool Because I Hated Math And Science
The bloggers of the iHomeschool Network are dispelling some homeschool myths today.
As homeschool mamas, we have all had conversations with people who love the idea of homeschooling, but say “I can’t homeschool because….” (insert reason here). Shoot. As homeschool mamas, we’ve all had a few reasons of our own at one time.
Join us as we look at these reasons why people think they can’t homeschool, give tips to overcome those reasons, and show why these are mostly just myths.
The myth I am dispelling is “I can’t homeschool, because I hated math and science.”
There could be many reasons for not liking math and science (this sounds like a good future blog post topic!), but none of them should be the reason you hold back from homeschooling.
Whether you are just not confident with your knowledge base or you are fearful of teaching these technical subjects, there are lots of resources available to you and your children that will ensure they get the homeschool math and science education they need.
If you are considering homeschooling, but hate math and science, read on. I’m sharing a few resources and ideas that will take away your dread.
Learn With Your Kids
I have a degree in science with lots of math under my belt and I learn so much right along with my kids everyday. Some of it is re-learning, as it is with most of us. We’ve all learned about photosynthesis, animal classification and geometry somewhere along the way, but because we don’t use that knowledge, we forget it. That’s ok.
It’s good for kids to see us learning. Â I read the same text as the kids and try to answer the study questions just like the kids do. When I don’t know an answer, the kids see me look it up. They see me learning and enjoying it.
I see homeschooling as a way to teach children to love to learn so that they never stop! When you are learning with your kids, not only are you teaching your kids about math and science, you are teaching them how to be life long learners.
Join A Co-op
Co-ops are wonderful ways for homeschool students to learn from other parents and instructors that may have more experience in a subject area or at least have a higher comfort level teaching that subject.
Science is probably the number one reason co-ops are formed and the number one class kids take in a co-op setting. So, a homeschool science co-op class shouldn’t be hard to find.
Tutors
In our area, math tutors, especially from Algebra onward, are popular. If you have done the best you can teaching with the material the curriculum has provided and your child needs more help understanding a concept, by all means, get a tutor. It’s an investment, but well worth it. Sometimes, you can even get an older homeschool student to tutor for cheap.
Online/DVD Classes
This past year, my daughter took Latin through a (affiliate link) Â Compass Classroom DVD course called Visual Latin. I loved this since I do not know anything about Latin. That little fact that I couldn’t teach Latin didn’t stop me from letting her learn. I just used a resource from someone who could.
Just like our experience with Latin, there many online and DVD courses for math and science to help you teach what you can’t or what is out of your comfort zone. Do your research and ask questions to find the fit for your family.
You can even get free help on a particular math or science topic from websites like Khan Academy.Â
