Ten Homeschool Science Field Trip Ideas

Looking for unique, fun and educational homeschool science field trip ideas for the new school year?

  1. Zoo – No explanation needed.
  2. Park – Great place to identify trees, bugs, birds…
  3. Water Treatment Facilities – Most municipal facilities are more than happy to give educational tours.
  4. Landfills – Some give tours or educational programs, other do not. I promise, you and your kids will think before throwing anything away after touring a landfill.
  5. Farm – Do you have friends or family with a farm you can visit? Some communities have working farms that are open to the public. There is so much to learn from visiting a farm. You could make it into a huge unit study.
  6. Veterinarian’s Office – Learn about being a doctor for animals.
  7. Planetarium – Great place to learn about planets and space in a comfy, theater setting.
  8. Observatory – Check for public viewing times at your local observatory or call for a private viewing.
  9. Research Labs – Contact a local corporate of college research lab for a tour and a Q and A.
  10. Bakery – If you don’t think baking bread is a science, then you’ve obviously never baked bread!
What is your favorite science field trip locale?

  1. I’d add pet stores. We’ve had many field trips to our local pet stores.

  2. Awesome list – thank you! I wish we had a zoo…the closest one is over 300 miles away. But, the rest of your list is perfect for us. :-)

  3. Very great ideas…..I am curious how you go about visiting a bread store to be able to watch the behind the scenes action to see the art of it all. Have others done this, and if so, how do you go about it? THANK YOU!! :)

    • Homeschool friends of ours just called our local Great Harvest Bread Company. They offer field trips to all schools.
