Teaching homeschool high school biology does not have to be scary or difficult. You just need the right resources. Using a quality homeschool biology curriculum like BJU Press Biology will make it a breeze.
A year or so ago, I was given a sneak peak at the new 5th edition high school homeschool biology textbook from BJU Press. I could tell my friends from BJU were proud of it and wanted to know what I thought. Initially, I just flipped through it to get a feel of the layout. I was immediately impressed and I hadn’t even gotten to the actual content of the text!
The more I read through the text and investigated the entire biology package that BJU Press put together the more I knew I needed to tell my readers about it. If you are looking for a homeschool high school level biology course that will give them a good handle on life science, not bore them to tears, and make life easy for a homeschool parent, BJU Press Biology is worth checking out. Why BJU Homeschool Biology Is Different
When I first looked through the new BJU Press Biology 5th edition, I was immediately struck my the images and graphics. They turned the textbook into an illustrated journey through the study of life. Students do not need to imagine what they are reading about. They can immediately see examples through actual photographs of organisms or through graphics that explain concepts. Each image has a corresponding text box that gives further explanation.
This illustrated textbook concept was made possible when illustrators and graphic designers sat down with the authors and editors to learn exactly what ideas and concepts were being discussed in each section of the text. They worked together to get the correlations right. The result was, instead of an editor throwing in a couple stock images to make the book look pretty and not so boring, a quality biology text with integrated images to enhance the learning process.
Even without the gorgeous images, the curriculum is solid, yet easy to understand. No dry text here. It explains biology in a way that makes it practical to students by using real world examples that they can relate to. For example, when explaining viruses, the text says a virus is like a flash drive. It has lots of information, but can do nothing until it is plugged in to something. When it plugs into a living organism, it can use that information to harm that organism. The flash drive is a real life, everyday example of something kids can relate to.
What I Like About BJU Biology
I like the illustrated nature of the new edition of BJU Biology. It makes the text come alive. When I was in school, the non-fiction books that interested me most had fantastic graphics like DK Eyewitness books. They held my attention much more than plain text ever could. There are other things I really like about BJU Biology that make it a great total curriculum package.
When I first started homeschooling, I was against teachers manuals. Most that I found were just copies of the student text with the answers for the review questions included. The BJU Press Biology teachers manual is different. It is a true teachers guide that takes the fear and guess work out of teaching high school biology.
It is packed with ideas and extra information that you can share with your students or just use to give you the background knowledge and confidence you need to teach biology. It is truly a useful tool.
Complete Lab Kit
There is a complete lab kit available for BJU homeschool biology. This includes dissection specimens. I am such a huge fan of dissections. Do not skip these!! The biology lab kit contains everything you need for the entire year of experiments and projects in one box. They have really made it easy for you!
What I Would Change
If there was one thing I could ad to the BJU Biology curriculum, I would emphasize lab reports a bit more. There is a great lab manual available for the hands-on labs. However, I like to teach high school level students to do more indepth lab reports. This is something you could always add if you felt it was necessary.
The Take Away
BJU Press Biology 5th edition is a great option for those of you looking for a high school lab science credit for your homeschool student. They will get a quality life science education that will not bore them to tears or be a huge struggle to get through. BJU has created resources such as the teachers manual, lab manuals, dissection kits, and DVDs to take the fear out of teaching high school biology.
