After starting his 30-year college teaching career as a non-Christian evolutionist, Dr. Gary Parker became a zealous creationist, eventually serving as professor of biology at the Institute for Creation Research in San Diego, lecturing worldwide for both ICR and Answers in Genesis, writing five science textbooks and seven creation books (translated into over 10 languages), and appearing in numerous films, videos and television programs. Dr. Parker and his wife, Mary, also run family camps, workshops, and credit courses through the Creation Adventures Museum near their home in Arcadia, Florida.
I am so thankful that Dr. Parker has agreed to share his wisdom, knowledge and resources with us here at The Homeschool Scientist.
Science is not, not, NOT the Christian’s enemy; science is the Christian’s ally in the battle with evolution! I’ve been enthusiastic about the scientific study of nature since childhood, looking for patterns of order and causal connections and testing ideas by observation and experiment. Since I first heard of evolution in science class, I just assumed (like most people) that evolution was a scientific concept, and I taught the arguments used to support evolution during my first few years as a college biology professor. Then a chemistry professor (Dr. Charles Signorino) challenged my fervent faith in evolution – using both evidences from the scientific study of nature (God’s world) and the Biblical record of God’s acts in history (God’s Word). For three years I tried to defend the arguments for evolution I knew so well, but I kept finding the scientifically testable study of God’s world made it harder to believe “molecules-to-man” evolution and easier to accept the Biblical record of earth history: God’s perfect world (Creation), ruined by man’s sin (Corruption), destroyed by Noah’s Flood (Catastrophe), restored to new life in Jesus (Christ).
Based on my talks and debates, Creation: Facts of Life surveys the evidence God used to change me “From Evolution to Creation” (the title of my testimony DVD). Now the scientific details are available from Master Books in a homeschool-friendly textbook series. The unit on DNA in my Building Blocks in Life Science (BBLS) uses clear graphics and Q/A to explain the stunning process by which living cells turn DNA base series into an inheritable code for making proteins responsible for specific structures and functions – and it shows how open-minded people using the basic intellectual tools of science, logic, and observation could readily conclude that “life” is the result of plan, purpose, and special creation and not of chemical evolution. (See Romans 1:20)
Using human skin color and other vivid examples, the unit on genetics in BBLS (heredity and variation) shows how adaptation occurs as living things “multiply after kind to fill the earth” in a short time without either chance mutations or struggle and death (which Darwin called “the war of nature” but preferred to call “natural selection”). The first unit in my Building Blocks in Science (BBS) explains the worldview differences between creation and evolution in relating science, history, and the Bible – then units 2 and 3 apply these contrasting worldviews to DINOSAURS! and to “Adam vs. ape-men”. Exploring the World Around You answers key questions (and fun questions) about Christian ecology.
All these books show how God’s world and God’s Word (science and Scripture) agree – encouraging both a love for testing ideas scientifically and a complete trust in the clear words of Scripture for finding answers to questions about the origin, history, and destiny of life – including your life and your personal place in God’s plan!
Have you used these resources? Let us know how you are teaching how science and scripture can agree.
