My son loves dinosaurs. He has lots of dinosaur books and loves to watch dinosaur documentaries. He’s a smart kid, too. In our house, we teach science and natural history from a creationist point of view, so when he reads “millions of years ago”, his little head tilts to the side. “What did they say? How can that be?” It just doesn’t make sense to him. It goes against the creationist science he has learned from other books and from the creation story he has learned from the Bible. As I searched for resources to give him some answers, I realized that was easier said than done.
Nature and science books either written from a creationist point of view or without the evolution rhetoric are relatively easy to find. Creationist dinosaur books, on the other hand, are harder to come by. I asked my friends at Master Books what they would recommend for my future paleontologist. Their quick and definitive answer was “Dinosaurs For Kids” by Ken Ham. My friends did not let me down.
From the moment my little man got his hands on the book, he was hooked. I was afraid that this would be a watered-down-gospeled-up dinosaur book with cartoon pictures and more religion than science. That would not keep my boy’s attention or teach him about dinosaurs! Instead, I found a quality book with great illustrations, lots of science facts (both about dinosaurs and creation) and biblical teaching that fit with the text.
This book was good for my 6 year old son who is a good reader. Some of the text was challenging, but he was interested in the subject so he worked through it. The pictures and boxed text gave highlights that he could scan to get information if he didn’t want to read the entire page. This is the kind of book we will be referring back to for years.
If you are looking for a dinosaur book that is both science and biblically based, Dinosaurs For Kids is the best I have seen! It is available from Master Books in print and digital formats.
