One of the best advantages to homeschooling is being able to design educational opportunities around your child’s interests. When children (or adults, for that matter) enjoy what they are doing, they will get the most out of it. Keeping children engaged and enjoying the learning process is key to a successful educational experience and to creating life long learners.
We have used the interest-led technique over and over in our homeschool. We have followed paths and rabbit trails to dive deeper into subjects ranging from ancient Egypt to sugar gliders. For instance, my daughter has always loved dogs. When she was younger, I checked out every chapter book featuring dogs I could find. We learned about dog breeds, dogs in history, and the anatomy of dogs. She loved every minute of it and learned so much.
Educating Your Minecraft Fan
One of the biggest crazes for kids in the past 8 years has been Minecraft. At first, I thought Minecraft was another mindless video game destined to suck the brains out of my children. All I could see them doing was digging holes and building walls. Looked like lots of fun. <—–That’s sarcasm.
Then, I began to see the strategy of the game. I saw my kids searching for specific materials to build different things. They were planning and designing structures and whole villages. They kept going back to the game day after day to continue their construction.
We started using Minecraft as a reward for getting school work done. It was a great motivator. Then, we started using Minecraft to build structures we were learning about, like the Egyptian Pyramids and log cabins.
Skrafty has taken using Minecraft for education to a whole new level. Skrafty blends great homeschool curriculum with Minecraft Building Challenges to keep kids motivated to learn and to deepen their understanding. With Skrafty, your kids can take courses in history, geography, math, science, and more! There are guided textbook lessons and live classes available. No matter which you choose, each lesson contains a Minecraft Challenge related to that lesson to engage students that will help them understand the information they are being presented.
Minecraft Homeschool Science
Since this is The Homeschool Scientist, I was really interested in the science courses that Skrafty offered and how Minecraft could be used to learn science.
Skrafty offers science courses for students age 5 through high school. Your students can take full year programs that aligns with Apologia science curriculum texts or shorter 6 week courses that focus on an area like anatomy or sharks.
Those courses that aren’t aligned with an outside textbook have either online text and videos or live online lectures. In each course, the lessons are clearly explained and must be checked off as completed before the student can get to the fun Minecraft Challenge. The challenges are turned in to assure they were completed.
