Mango Languages For Homeschool
*I was given access to Mango Languages for free and compensated for my time in exchange for an honest review.
Homeschooling math and science doesn’t scare me. I’ve got that covered. Foreign languages. Now, that’s frightening.
My two and a half years of high school French didn’t really stick. I’m not totally sure I learned very much anyway. So, I’m not exactly qualified to instruct my children in a foreign language. I know it is necessary for their education, so we’ve tried a couple programs with limited success.
Then, Mango Languages caught my eye. Mango Languages has tailored programs for schools, libraries, corporations, individuals, and now homeschoolers. I liked the online aspect of the program and the price seemed very reasonable. Why not give it a try?
Now that we are a month or so it to the program I can see some real benefits of Mango Languages over other programs and I believe this is a winner.
Conversational Language Learning
We have found that most foreign language curricula are vocabulary based. After a year of study, students can count, name colors and random objects, and a few verbs. That’s about it. Useful conversation skills and dialogue is not learned until later in the study.
Mango Languages is conversational. It starts with learning how to great someone and make polite conversation. My daughter could actually ask me questions in Italian after the first lesson, not just tell me what words she learned. This built her confidence and made her want more.
Mobile
When people ask if we homeschool, I’m thinking of telling them we do “education-on-the-go”. With all our activities, we are simply not home very much. We have to be mobile.
Thankfully, Mango Languages has a FREE downloadable app so we can take our foreign language lessons with us!
Interactive e-Learning
Instead of boring worksheets, Mango Languages allow students to read and hear the language spoken correctly at the same time. The student is asked to participate in each step of the lesson with translation, pronunciation, and critical thinking.
Students can, also, record their voice and compare it to the instructor to test their pronunciation.
Built In Testing
Since I do not speak Italian, giving and grading an Italian test would be very difficult for me. Mango Languages has assessments after each chapter. The results and the progress of the student is kept and the parent can review them at anytime. This is great for keeping track of grades and determining where more review might be needed. (Read how Cindy West at Our Journey Westward is using this feature to keep track of hours for high school foreign language credit.)
Huge Variety Of Foreign Languages
When my daughter decided she wanted to take Italian, I though “What a fun language to learn!” Then, I started looking for Italian language programs. Um…not so great. Italian is not as popular as I thought.
Mango Languages has over 60 languages to choose from. My friend can use Mango Languages to teach her daughter her native Polish. Our neighbors can use it for Croatian. From Latin to Korean to Swahili, Mango Languages has you covered!
My son wants to learn Pirate. Yes. Mango Languages has a Pirate course.
