Math Homeschool Curriculum With A Biblical Worldview
I was sponsored by Masterbooks to review their mathematics homeschool curriculum and am excited to share my experience. All opinions are mine alone.
I’ve always considered math to be a strictly secular discipline. Math is just numbers, right? What do numbers have to do with worldview. Until I read the new homeschool curriculum, Principles Of Mathematics, from Master Books, I never knew.
How Does Math Support A Biblical Worldview?
My first thought at the mention of Biblical Mathematics is learning to count by 2’s while learning the story of the animals on the ark, or some sort of secret hidden code locked in the numbers mentioned in the Bible. Not exactly the stuff to build a curriculum or a world view on.
In Principles Of Mathematics, Katherine Loop, shows how math at its foundation points to a Biblical Worldview. She points out the math is a way of describing creation. It shows the consistence of the universe.
Math works outside a textbook because God is faithful to uphold all things. Math facts never change because God never changes. We can rely on math because we can rely on God. Math is complex and complicated because God created a complex universe and it takes a lot of different rules and methods to even begin to describe it!
This knowledge helps us understand math and it’s purpose. Math is actually a gift from God to help us explain creation and help us in our daily lives. This is far from the boring textbook subject many of us think math to be.
Who Is Principles Of Mathematics For?
Principles Of Mathematics is written for the 6th-8th grade student. Year 1 and 2 of the curriculum fit well in the two years leading up to high school algebra. (Year 2 will be released spring 2016.) This is, also, a great curriculum for high school students who need to firm up their foundation in math or to learn how mathematics support a Biblical worldview.
I was impressed that while this curriculum stresses a Biblical worldview, the math was not lost. In fact, Principles Of Mathematics does an excellent job of teaching an understanding of math. This number sense is far more valuable than memorization.
My children are entering 5th and 9th grade this year. My plan is to work through the chapters with my children together. This will teach them both to see math from a God centered point of view. As a Christian, I think this is important.
Our time with this study will also reinforce math concepts for my 9th grader and introduce concepts in a new way for my 5th grader. I am excited to get started.
The included workbook with quizzes and tests will be great to work through for both kids.
