This month has had an outer space theme at The Homeschool Scientist. I got so excited about the Hidden Figures movie release that I just ran with it!
Even though my kids are studying biology and human anatomy this year through their Apologia curriculum, we do take time to learn about other interesting science topics as we find them and take interest. This month, I’ve been talking about outer space so much we decided to do a short space unit study.
Outer Space Lapbooks
One of the best resources for lapbooks is A Journey Through Learning. They have lapbooks for every age and lots of topics. Since we were doing a short study, we chose the Astronomy Express lapbook. This lapbook is guiding us through the celestial bodies found in the solar system. It is a great review for my daughter and has some new information for my son.
If we decide to dig deeper, A Journey Through Learning has several other outer space lapbooks that cover space exploration and what the universe is made of more in depth. There is even a lapbook that corresponds with Apologia’s Astronomy curriculum.
Benefits Of Using Lapbooks In A Unit Study
One of our favorite ways to do a unit study, especially an impromptu one, is with lapbooks. Lapbooks let kids use their creativity while teaching them to take notes. Each element of a lapbook is created for a specific bit of information. This helps kids focus and organize the information they have gathered.
Lapbooks, also, serve as a study guide for an upcoming test or as a learning resource for the future. My son has used my daughter’s lapbooks she created 3 and 4 years ago to learn about a subject.
