In almost seven years of homeschooling, we have tried to keep our kids up on what is going on in the world. We talk about world events and how these events can affect them and their lives.
I gather information from various websites and newspapers to read and discuss with the kids. Finding age appropriate sources that are written to keep kids’ interests is often difficult. That’s why we love World News Group.
What is World News Group?
World News Group publishes age appropriate magazines just for kids. These Christian-based magazines and companion websites are designed to fuel a love a learning, while building their faith.
God’s Big World is for early learners. It’s filled with stories and activities you can do with your child or encourage them to step out on their own. The website contains audio stories and other activities.
World Kids is designed for 7-10 year olds. The theme of the magazine is “let’s go exploring” and that’s what your child will do through rich images and engaging articles that are cross-linked with digital content for deeper study online.
World Teen is full of age-appropriate articles reporting what’s going on all across the globe from a Christian perspective. It offers a refreshing change from textbooks and adult oriented news websites. World Teen is written specifically for teens and uses lots of eye-catching graphics and photos. Topics covered in World Teen range from science to technology, friendships to culture, including movies, music and books. The daily news bytes videos are great for keeping up with the most current news.
How We Use World Teen Magazine
We started with World Kids when my daughter was in 3rd grade. She has since graduated to World Teen and my 10 year old son reads World Kids. We have always used these magazines for leisure reading and for learning about the world around us.
I let the kids read at their leisure for a couple days, then I assign a few pages each week to be read. This always leads to great conversations and more questions. Sometimes, we need to gather some background information for more understanding or we need to look up answers to our questions in other sources.
For my teen, I look for something in the reading interests her the most, then I have her dig deeper. She uses the library, internet searches, and news stories to fill in the gaps and answer questions she might have. She enjoys the research when it is a subject she is curious about. It’s a great way to add variety to their knowledge base.
