How Bitsbox Exceeded My Expectations - The Homeschool Scientist

Have you noticed all the subscription boxes that keep popping up? Science experiments, gourmet meals, crafts, knitting – just to name a few. We’ve tried a few of these boxes. Some are fantastic. Others are just ok.

We are on our second month of our Bitsbox subscription which the company let us have to review and to let them know if we thought it would be a good fit for homeschool families. I can say already that Bitsbox is our favorite educational subscription box yet!

Why?

Bitsbox simply exceeded our expectations. The website description sounded very appealing and interesting to me, but when the boxes came….woah. (You can read about our first experience with Bitsbox , how it really taught my son to code in an afternoon, and view a video of all that came in that first box.)

Bitsbox

A Month’s Worth

Many boxes and kits are a one and done project, and that is what I was expecting. That is not the case with Bitsbox. Each box is packed with more than enough projects to last all month long until your next box arrives. Even if your child works through all the challenge cards and trading, there are so many options to each task that they could customize each one indefinitely.

Skill Building

Coding is like learning a language. You learn the basics and then you build on that. As your child works through the challenge cards in each box, they build on their skills they just learned. In the second box, your child will build off skills they learned in the second box.

Learning Real Skills

Bitsbox teaches kids to code in Javascript/HTML5. This is arguably the most popular coding language. It’s what most popular websites are based on. Giving your child a good basis in Javascript will give them a headstart in our technical world.

The boy is playing one of the game apps he created with @bitsboxkids. He coded this in about 5 minutes! He has created all kinds of cool stuff with Bitsbox. He never thought he’d like coding until now. .. #homeschool #stem #coding #codingforkids #bitsbox

Instant Gratification

My son is not a patient child. He does not like to sit still at all. He is all boy and likes action. If it doesn’t capture his attention almost immediately, he is done. With Bitsbox, he was creating real games, puzzles, and other programs that he could interact with within minutes.

Bitsbox Is Fun

Bitsbox allows kids to create games and other apps they can play with, modify, and build on. Not only are these apps easy to code, they are fun. There are so many projects to do and modifications to make that kids can truly create unique apps that are all their own and have fun doing it!

Plus, each box contains offline fun like stickers, temporary tattoos, and wooden robot puzzles that even our sugar glider finds fascinating!
