30 Stress Relieving Ideas For The Homeschool Family

I love my kids. I love spending time with them. I love that I have the opportunity to homeschool them.

Sometimes things I love STRESS ME OUT!!

So is the plight of the homeschool mom. Most of the time, life is good and runs smooth. Then there are times when life just gets crazy. One child decides he doesn’t want to write today. The other child is having a teenage meltdown. Someone just spilled the science experiment all over the kitchen floor. You need to start dinner. There is no food in the house. One kid has hockey practice in 30 minutes and the other needs to be dropped off at a robotics club meeting on the way. Your husband is working late.

There are just times when we all need a break!

Instead of running away, I take a deep breath and do something to de-stress. I have to in order to keep my sanity. Running the hamster wheel without a break is not healthy spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

One of my absolute favorite things to do to get my focus off of the stressors and regroup my thoughts is to listen to a sermon message. My favorite apps are:

  • Insight for Living with Pastor Swindol
  • BBN app
  • Moody Radio app
  • Unshackled

I have put together a free printable for journaling pages and bookmarks to help you reflect, plan, and refocus. I’ve included some of my favorite scripture verses.

Stressed Out Hacks

I have my ways I like to de-stress. A hike in the woods if the weather is nice. A hot bath. A nap. They are my usual go-tos for relieving stress. On The Homeschool Scientist Facebook page, I asked homeschool moms for their favorite ways to reduce their stress level. They had some great ideas that I would like to try.

“Have a cup of tea in my favorite chair.”

“When possible, sit outside in the sun and listen to music.”

“Take a mental health day and we watch educational videos.”

“Take a hike, spend the day exploring the creeks, rivers, and lakes… more a fun day mini vacation with an explorative study day.”

“I started a recycled garden with the kids and they look for “trash” that can be used as a planter/vine support/garden barrier….and I get to sit in it admiring the vegetables growing. Usually when I start explaining the process of soil composition, composting or the vegetables themselves, the children seem to disappear.”

“Coffee with a friend.”

“Nap”

” I work for my cousin doing marketing for her business. So, basically something creative with adults.”

“Read”

“Music, sit on the porch and listen to birds, or looking at a magazine”

“Gardening”

“Step outside, breathe deeply and reset”

“Nap, they have screen time and I get an hour of down time.”

“After I have put my daughter to sleep, I enjoy a tall bottle of mineral water along with watching a movie or the news. Often I am also texting with my mom friends to finalize co-op or play date plans.”

Jess at Tantrums to Smiles, shares some helpful ways for finding time to take care of yourself as a parent.

I know there are a lot of teachers in the THSS community and these self care strategies for teachers will be a big help. Having taught in the classroom and as a homeschool mom, these ideas apply to anyone who teaches! Prioritizing intentional self-care doesn’t just help classroom and homeschool teachers survive, it helps us thrive. From setting boundaries to finding little moments of calm, this article breaks down practical strategies to boost well-being and protect your passion.

Looking for more ideas to relax and re-energize? Sometimes our stress either comes from our children (maybe arguing over who gets the last bit of milk in their cereal or whose turn it is to let the dog out) or our stress affects our children. Our kids might need to take a brain break from the 3 R’s and work on some character issues. Check out these 100 Acts of Kindness for kids ideas and printable. We have certainly taken a break from schoolwork to focus on helping others, and it does change perspective. For a few years, we volunteered at the local children’s hospice center where we cleaned up the garden after the both Summer and Winter, watered the garden once a week during the summer, made planters for the garden, picked flowers from our yard, and delivered little vases for staff to put in the rooms of the adult hospice patients.

There are times when our kids (and Mom) need to close the books and focus on something else. We love watching educational videos, especially about animals. Here are brain break videos for kids.

Another idea is to just walk away from the books when tensions are high and study something fun. There are always fun celebration days through each month. Check out this page FULL of ideas centered around weird holidays. Pick out a few and plan something completely outside the box and away from the planned assignments.

Here are some other ideas to help diffuse the stress and focus on relaxing and re-energizing:

  • Take a walk
  • Spend time in God’s Word by reading scripture or listening to a favorite preacher on a podcast.
  • Lock your bedroom door and have a cup of tea
  • Sit outside and watch the birds
  • Piddle around the garden or yard
  • Hire a mommy’s helper so you can have some alone time, even if it’s in your own home
  • Get a babysitter and go for a drive
  • Call a friend
  • Listen to music
  • Meal plan so meals aren’t a source of stress
  • Spa Day
  • Get your nails or hair done
  • Read a book
  • Knit, crochet, paint, craft
  • Watch a movie
  • Date night
  • Hire a housekeeper
  • Keep pizza delivery coupons on the fridge
