A Mathseeds Review to Help You Make a Confident Purchasing Decision

When I first looked over the Mathseeds website before starting our Mathseeds review, my daughter heard me playing something and came over to watch. Before I knew it, I finished setting up her profile, and she was doing math lessons. It was hard to get her to stop!

This year, my daughter started 2nd grade. She has always liked math, but in the early years, we mainly focused on basic math concepts and facts, telling time, etc.

Because second grade math seems to get a little more involved, I decided that this year was the time to find a more structured approach for math.  My main priorities were finding a math program that was scaffolded, user-friendly, and easy to be consistent with daily– with bonus points if she can work through at least some of it independently!

These are the main reasons I jumped at the chance to do this Mathseeds review for their online subscription + 200 Second Grade Math Skills Workbook. Keep reading to find out how the Mathseeds program works, how it is working for us, and if I’d recommend it to other homeschool families! I did receive compensation for our Mathseeds review. However, all comments are mine and reflect our true opinions and experience with Mathseeds.

Our Mathseeds Review: What We Received, What the Program Includes, and What it (Usually) Costs

My daughter, like most kids, loves playing games. The main thing I knew about Mathseeds before agreeing to the Mathseeds review was that it involved game-driven lessons that she could play online, so I knew she would enjoy that. I also liked that there is a workbook to reinforce the game element and give her more physical practice working with numbers.

Before receiving the workbook, I did a little online digging into Mathseeds (who else can’t resist a good Google investigation?) The Mathseeds website states that this program is “an award-winning online math program for kids aged 3-9. Your child can enjoy fun, interactive, and rewarding lessons that teach foundational math and problem-solving skills while nurturing an early love of math.”

That sounded pretty great to me! I looked further into what awards this program has won, and I was surprised by their diversity, quality, and quantity! The list includes multiple Parent’s Choice Awards, Academic Awards, as well as a Smart Toy Award and more. You can find that information here if you’re curious to know more about that.

Not long after this, we had everything we needed to get started with Mathseeds and our Mathseeds review.  I received:

  • The workbook (200 Math Skills for Second Grade)
  • Full access to the online Mathseeds program (Website and available as an app)

The workbook has 50 lessons and ten quizzes (each quiz covers five lessons). Each lesson gives students four pages of worksheets to practice the lesson and skills being introduced. I loved how the lessons matched perfectly with the Mathseeds online lessons 101-150. While I didn’t pay for it, I also appreciated that it is very reasonable at $19.95.

What I Liked About the Online Component of Mathseeds

favortie features

The online portion of Mathseeds has so much to offer for different types of learners! Here are some of the main features that appeal to me it for my learner.

  • The option to take an assessment quiz so your child can start at their exact level
  • A different option to set the level manually, so that you can match up with math lessons in the Mathseeds workbook
  • The ability to quickly check in on your child’s progress, amount of time spent on lessons, time spent on review games, and current level
  • The rewards/celebrations given when a new level is completed (an egg hatches with a creature inside. My daughter loved this!)
  • The multi-sensory approach of the lessons
  • “Mental Minutes” and “Driving Tests” for additional math fact practice and review

“It’s teaching me about things I haven’t learned. I like that it’s fun. Most math books don’t have tablet games that go with them. That helps because, if you don’t understand something in the book, you can do the games first, and then you’ll understand what the workbook is all about.”

Mathseeds Pricing (And We Also Checked Out Their Reading Eggs!)

Before I get into more of what we liked about Mathseeds, let’s look at the pricing and their current specials.

An online subscription for Mathseeds is $6.99/month or $4.17 with the yearly billing. This seems very reasonable for what you get, especially given that each subscription comes with individual accounts for up to 4 children. I only have one child using the program, but I can see the online program being a great addition to homeschool families with several young kids.

(Sidenote: you can also get this bundled with the Reading Eggs/Reading Express, which is what I received. While I’m not reviewing the literacy aspect of the program here, I will just say that it’s pretty fantastic.)

Below, I’ll discuss how these worked together and what we both thought about it!

Mathseeds Review: What We Loved

What We Loved About Mathseeds

  • THE “GAMES” – My daughter’s favorite part about the Mathseeds program is definitely the “games,” which is what she calls the online lessons. That’s no real surprise, right? But I mean, she really loves them. What I love is how engaging and effective they are!
  • THE ASSESSMENT – I also like that the online portion comes with an assessment test. This is especially handy for figuring out where your child might need some extra work and which concepts are rusty. By contrast, I also liked the ability to set your child’s level manually. (I needed to do this to sync up the online lessons with the physical book lessons.)
  • THE FLEXIBILITY & VISIBILITY – Basically, I just like the flexibility here. Want to match up your child’s online lessons to the Math Skills Workbook? You can do that.  You need to review something? Set it where you need it. Want to test your child and see what they need to work on? You can do that too. You can do all of the above if you’re just curious!
  • WORKS ON A VARIETY OF DEVICES – In terms of what device you need to use the Mathseeds online program, you can use anything with access to the internet. I tried it on my laptop, but my daughter mostly used the internet browser on her Kindle to access the online program. I think this would work best if you can download the Mathseeds app on a tablet or iPhone (I tested this out on my phone to verify). However, it’s not necessary that you have a tablet or iPhone for your child to access and play. It’ll work as long as you have the internet and a browser.
  • THE ONLINE PORTION IS A SOLD FOUNDATION FOR THE WORKBOOKS -The way we have been using the online portion – to go with the Math Skills Workbook- has worked out seamlessly so far. The online lessons and quizzes provide a totally solid foundation for the workbook. I typically have her do the online lessons first and then the workbook second.
  • REWARD SYSTEM WORKED WELL FOR US – Completing the workbook pages gets rewarded by starting with the “math games” the next time she does math. In this way, this Mathseeds duo acts like its own reward system. It’s been very motivating for her, which has helped with consistency!
  • MULTI-SENSORY APPROACH – I have been impressed by the multi-sensory approach to teaching in the online lessons. Each lesson combines auditory teaching (songs, verbal explanations), visual engagement, and kinesthetic practice. There’s something for every learner in each lesson, and plenty of practice is given to reinforce what is being taught.

“I can see why this program is ‘award-winning!’  Overall, I give the Mathseeds online program a 10/10.”

The Mathseeds 200 Essential Math Skills Workbook for 2nd Grade

This is a well-organized, comprehensive math workbook for a very inexpensive price, and it is absolutely worth getting as a complement to the online Mathseeds program.

For me, doing the workbook after completing the lessons is what takes Mathseeds from a fun supplemental math program to a full math curriculum. There’s just something about being able to translate head knowledge to pencil and paper. Maybe it’s me being old school, but it makes the learning feel consolidated and complete. Plus, at age 7 or 8 or 9, I think most kids still need practice physically writing and working with numbers.

Another thing I liked about the Mathseeds workbook was that it gave quick, achievable lessons that reinforced learning and encouraged success. By that, I mean that none of the lessons were ever overwhelming. Each lesson does a good job of teaching the skills and giving kids time to practice them in a few different ways. One lesson typically takes my daughter between 15-20 minutes to complete, which seems to be just the right amount for our homeschool day.

My One Mathseeds Review Caveat

My caveat is a good caveat!

While you can do the Mathseeds online program without the workbook, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend doing the workbook without the online program. The book is a great supplement to the online lessons, but – since there aren’t a lot of examples or explanations in the workbook- it wouldn’t work as well as a stand-alone math curriculum.

Final Thoughts On My Mathseeds Review

Ultimately, I really appreciate this learning duo from Mathseeds, and my daughter has enjoyed learning with it! We are so glad the opportunity to do this Mathseeds review or we wouldn’t have found this new math resource for our family.

Math has become the first thing she wants to do, and the combination of Math Skills Workbook + Online Program has kept her motivated. This, in turn, has helped with consistency and a noticeable increase in math skills over the past few months. I have been so happy to see her progress and how much fun she has had doing math!

I think the Mathseeds online program is excellent on its own, but I would definitely recommend getting the Math Skills Workbook, too, to bring that learning home (literally, on a handwritten page, where you can admire it!) These two facets of the program really are better together.

As my daughter said: “It’s teaching me about things I haven’t learned. I like that it’s fun. Most math books don’t have tablet games that go with them. That helps because, if you don’t understand something in the book, you can do the games first, and then you’ll understand what the workbook is all about.”

I love the multi-sensory approach and the user-friendly way that these two resources can work together. As a busy homeschooling/work from home mom, I also appreciate how kids can independently use this program to sharpen their math skills.

My main critique, ultimately, is this: I’m going to need you to add more grade levels and workbooks, Mathseeds (and soon please!)
