How To Save Money On Printer Ink

I don’t mind spending money on good homeschool curriculum. I don’t mind spending money on science experiment supplies and field trips. I don’t even mind spending money on more glue, because I every time we use a bottle for a craft or a project I never see that bottle again. It’s strange.
What I do hate to spend money on is printer ink! I know I’m not alone. I have talked to many homeschool moms who agree with me 100%
The problem starts with the fact that the printer/copier is one of the most important tools for homeschool moms. If we have more than one child, we don’t write in the workbooks. We copy them.
We download TONS of unit studies, printables, and craft templates and then we need to print them so we can use them. It’s great to be able to have a gazillion resources available instantly on the internet, but we have to be able to print them out.
Because of all this copying and printing, homeschool families go through a crazy amount of printer ink. That is until we run out for the 3rd time in one school year. When we start to total up the amount we are spending on ink, we panic and unplug the printer. It is off limits. Our ink budget is gone.
Sound familiar?
Save Money On Printer Ink
Over the years, we have been through a few printers. Each time one dies, I research our next purchase. The main things I look for are price, pages per minute, and ink cost. I could write another post about printer/copiers we have tried, but the long and short of it is we keep coming back to HP. They are simple to set up and work great for a long time.
HP solidified my allegiance when they came out with the HP Instant Ink program. This program allows us to save over $200 on our yearly ink purchases. Â I was skeptical at first, but after one year of using HP Instant Ink I can say this is the real deal. We are saving money and we never run out of ink!
How Does HP Instant Ink Work?
When you use a compatible HP printer, you can sign up for the HP Instant Ink program based on the amount of printing your family does monthly. Your printer will send a message via the internet to HP when your ink is getting low. HP will ship a special ink cartridge to your door. These cartridges contain more ink than regular capacity cartridges, so you will replace them less often.
HP, also, sends you postage paid shipping materials so you can return your used cartridges for recycling. All this for a small monthly fee ($2.99, $4.99, or $9.99) based on the plan you choose.
We use the $4.99 plan. That gives us 100 pages to print a month. If we were to print 100 pages a month buying ink cartridges at the store the traditional way, it would cost us around $264/year. With HP Instant Ink, we pay only $60/year. That’s a savings of $204!!!!
Some times we print less and sometimes we print more. The great thing about HP Instant Ink is that unused pages roll over! I don’t think we’ve ever printed more than our 100 pages plus our roll over pages, but if we did, we can print more for a small extra fee. So easy!
