Bug crafts and activities are fun any time of the year since insects are always around and exhibit different behaviors in cold vs. warm weather. When warm weather sets in, some insects bury in the ground or in the leaf debris and stay inactive until warm weather arrives.

Any season is the perfect time of year to start teaching your kids about bugs and insects in a fun and creative way.

The bug crafts and activities listed below also include free science lessons and printables to add, as best fits, your teaching plan. The first bug craft incorporates science and art to help younger students understand insect life cycles.

I don’t know about you, but my kids have always been a little bit really into bugs. Whether it’s beetles or ladybugs, they can’t seem to get enough! We always have a collection jar or container handy in case the kids find a cool bug they want to look at up close for a while.

Over the years, we have studied insects a lot. Some lessons were planned, and some were impromptu. We’ve learned about bees, butterflies, the benefits of insects, how to classify insects, and even how to create an insect collection.

Bug Crafts and Activities

You don’t have to get close and personal with bugs to appreciate them. There are lots of bug crafts and activities you can do with your kids that you both will enjoy and will add to their insect fascination. Try a few of these.

I hold a master’s degree in child development and early education and am working on a post-baccalaureate in biology. I spent 15 years working for a biotechnology company developing IT systems in DNA testing laboratories across the US. I taught K4 in a private school, homeschooled my children, and have taught on the mission field in southern Asia. For 4 years, I served on our state’s FIRST Lego League tournament Board and served as the Judging Director.  I own thehomeschoolscientist and also write a regular science column for Homeschooling Today Magazine.
