Grammar Game
Grammar and writing are not my son’s favorite subjects. We’ve been trying to make our lessons more fun where we can. One thing we came up with was this grammar game to learn the parts of speech.
Creating The Game
I found a bunch of thin wood cut-outs in different shapes in our craft box and sorted them into groups. Each group was assigned a part of speech – noun, verb, and adjective. I wrote a word on each piece corresponding to the group it was in.
Playing The Game
When it was game time, I simply put the pieces in a pile and my son sorted by parts of speech. Having each part of speech represented by one shape helped self-correct and build confidence.
Another fun way to play is to try and match up the pieces to form simple sentences or the basis of larger ones. This is a great way to teach verb tenses, since the tense might need to be changed in order for the sentence to make sense. We came up with some really silly sentences, which made the game all the more fun.
Make your own silly sentences and then try to arrange them into a big silly story!
As your child learns other parts of speech, Â pieces and groups can be added on to the game.
These game pieces were easy to create and could be done with cut up paper, as well. Try this at home and have fun with your grammar!
