Most homeschool parents feel confident teaching math during the elementary years. Those basic math skills are what most people use in everyday life, so those skills are familiar and can be easy to teach.

As students reach middle and high school and they progress to the pre-algebra and algebra levels, the confidence of many homeschool parents wane. Most of us don’t use those skills as often, so they can be difficult to teach.

Parents with those higher levels math students usually begin to look for other homeschool math curriculum options than they had currently been using for elementary math. A great option is an online homeschool math curriculum.

## Using Online Homeschool Math Curriculum

My daughter is finishing up pre-algebra level math and will be starting algebra with a different curriculum soon. I wasn’t quite sure how her transition would be, so we decided to use a pre-algebra level online math curriculum to make sure she had the right skills needed to move on to algebra.

Benefits of an online math curriculum:

- Video instruction by a trained math educator (generally)
- Gives students some independence
- Gives the ability to see the lesson over and over if needed to learn the concept
- Many have online grading built in to the program
- Parents can monitor progress without having to be an expert in math
- Can be used for a full math curriculum or for review purposes

## Unlock Math

**Unlock Math **online homeschool math curriculum has been a great option for my daughter. Since a monthly subscription to **Unlock Math** is available, she can utilize it for a month or two of** pre-algebra **review. She was able to choose the topics that she needed more work on and she actually enjoyed it!

**Unlock Math**, she logs into her own virtual math school complete with instructor via video, assessment to determine her progress, and the ability to keep grading records if we wanted to use it as a full curriculum.

In the dashboard, she can see her progress and select what she wants to work on at that time. I can also view that dashboard to see her progress and keep her accountable.

## Learning To Understand Math

**Unlock Math** uses video lessons from a great instructor who is obviously excited about teaching math. She makes the lessons engaging and interesting offering several ways to visualize and understand each concept.

**Unlock Math**uses a variety of carefully selected problem types used throughout the curriculum in practice problems, challenges, and math warm-ups. This helps make sure that students are not only learning, but are retaining and understanding what they have learned.

In all assessments and practice problems, the correct answer and explanation is given for each incorrect answer so students can learn from their mistakes. This was very helpful for my daughter. If she got 2 or three practice problems wrong in a row. She knew she was not grasping the concept and viewed the lesson again.

Each problem in **Unlock Math** is presented one at a time so students aren’t overwhelmed by an entire page of problems. Students can finish all the problems or stop at just a couple if they feel they have learned the material. There is no drill-and-kill math here. **Unlock Math** is completely self-paced.

## Interactive Testing And Assessment

When students are ready and feel they understand the math concepts presented in each lesson, they can take the assessments to test their knowledge. **Unlock Math **offers quizzes for each chapter section and a test at the end of each chapter. Students are given feedback with explanations for missed problems.

They can always go back and watch the video lesson and do the practice problems, quizzes, and tests again. Unlock Math gives the opportunity to learn to mastery.

## Automated Grading

If you are using **Unlock Math** for a complete homeschool math curriculum, you will appreciate the automated grading system. And, it really is a system.

Each practice problem, warm up problem, quiz, and test is graded. As a parent, you can log into your account and see your student’s progress report giving you their grade average for each section of the math lessons.

You can also log into a much more detailed grade book that allows you to see exactly which problems your students got right or wrong. This can be a very helpful tool for you and your child.
