I started The Homeschool Scientist 4 years ago with the mission of taking the fear out of and putting the fun into homeschool science after talking with many homeschool parents who were struggling with science. Over the years, I have posted many experiments, activities and resources to help parents realize they can teach homeschool science. However, I still get the same questions.
How do I choose the right science curriculum for my children? How do I teach science when I don't know a lot about it? How do I get my kids excited about science? What if I don't want to do messy experiments? Am I teaching them enough?
That is why I created the How To Teach Homeschool Science Without A Curriculum course. This course will answer all those questions, help you know what to do with all the resources I've been sharing and that are available to you, and make this the best year of homeschool science ever!
Why would you not want to use a curriculum?
I know it might sound scary, but stay with me. When I first started homeschooling, my homeschool mentor (Tip: We all need one at every stage of homeschooling.) handed me a stack of experiment books and told me that his was my science curriculum. Keep in mind, I'm a scientist by education and profession. I panicked.
"Don't you need a curriculum?" Many reasons went through my mind.
She just smiled. "Do you want your kids to love and understand science or love a textbook and science vocabulary words?"
For the first 2 years of homeschooling, we didn't use a set curriculum and to this day, we use curriculum mainly as a guide. Because of that, my kids are scientists. They don't just regurgitate big words. They have understanding of concepts, because they have done science, not just read about it.
That is the major benefit of not using a science curriculum. There are more.
* Not using a curriculum can be easier on the budget
* You can be more flexible with how deep you go into a subject
* You can cater to the needs and interests of your children
* You can change subjects on the fly if needed
* It can be easier to teach multiple ages by creating your own study
